Regular check-ups can help rid you of those occasional little “niggles”, help maintain good postural alignment, balance and mobility and therefore can assist in preventing further troubles. Osteopathic treatment focuses on identifying the underlying muscle and tissue, and joint imbalances or restrictions within the whole body which may lead to future pain and or stiffness.

In the 1850s in the USA, Dr Andrew Taylor Still was a physician and surgeon who developed a theory which later became known as Osteopathic Medicine. Still was dissatisfied with the effectiveness of the 19th century medicine he was practising, seeing many patients die because of their treatment. He was one of the first in his time to study the attributes of good health so that he could better understand the process of disease and was one of the first to promote the idea of preventative medicine, and in treating the causes not just the symptoms. He started the first Osteopathic teaching college in Missouri, USA in 1892.

Osteopathy in Australia is a drug-free, non-invasive form of manual medicine that focuses on the health of the whole body, (your neuro-musculoskeletal system - the bones, muscles, nerves, and other tissues that support your body and control its movements) not necessarily just the injured or affected part. Osteopaths may also check other systems of the body – such as your circulatory, nervous, and lymphatic systems – to see if they may be affected.

Osteopathic treatment can incorporate many techniques including soft tissue stretching and massage, myofascial release, muscle energy techniques nerve mobilisation, therapeutic dry needling (acupuncture), joint articulation and manipulation, and craniosacral techniques. The treatment is gentle and performed with your assistance.

Your osteopath can also discuss lifestyle ergonomics, therapeutic movement and can create individually tailored exercise programs for you. They may advise on psychological and social support and can also work with or refer you to other practitioners when necessary.
